We were talking about fan fictions. How fan fictions are taking over the world. I urged aspiring writers on the aadhaar forum to write fan fictions and build their own fan base through it. Not many know that the famous author E.L.James of the best selling erotic romance novel 'Fifty Shades of Grey' started her writing journey as a fan fiction writer. Fifty Shades of Grey, the international phenomenon which has now sold over 100 million copies began as a fan fiction spin off on the 'Twilight' novels.
After reading the "Twilight" series, E.L. James started posting her own erotic take on the novels on an online fan fiction forum,

But many readers on the fan fiction forum found James' stories too provocative and asked her to remove some of them from the site. This made her conceive the idea of Fifty Shades of Grey and create the iconic characters, Christian and Ana. Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, the two protagonists of Fifty Shaed of Grey are basically Edward Cullen and Bella Swan of 'Twilight.'
In Fifty Shades, Christian Grey is a mysterious and devilishly handsome CEO. In Twilight, Edward Cullen is a mysterious and devilishly handsome vampire. In both stories, the heroine is understated and overawed by the men's fortunes and good looks.

James went on to create her own website — — where she posted more of her stories. Her online serial, originally published by the title "Masters of the Universe," which James self-published through a small writers community in May 2011. Within one year, she sold about 30,000 copies in e-book downloads.
Soon the literary agents took notice of the book's rising online popularity. In March 2012, James signed a 7-figure contract with Random House’s Vintage Books. Thus came the phenomenon called 'Fifty Shades of Grey' which sold 10 million copies in just six weeks. By the end of 2012, sales hit 70 million copies worldwide.
The Fifty Shades Trilogy has so far sold over 100 million copies worldwide. It has been translated into 52 different languages and its film adaptations have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars.
